Although the concept was to use actual balloons, they were not able to be manufactured in the time, so we sculpted them out of foam and vacu-formed a number of halves from the sculpted form. Some were placed back to back to form whole hearts, and some were left as half hearts in the background We used two different sizes: 5' and 3'. "Whole-hearted" and "half-hearted" were among the many phrases used in the process.

You can just see the 1/16th" cables the hearts are hanging from, but with the heavier rope hanging below, and the whole thing swaying, they produced the illusion of floating balloons tethered to the ground with stakes. The dry-ice effect on the ground added a more mysterious quality to the set. Film Clip Available |
